Bus

Hong Kong has an excellent bus system.  Air conditioned double decker buses cover most of the city and are operated by several different companies.  They are a comfortable and efficient way to get around.  Signs are generally in Cantonese, Mandarin, and English.

Fares vary by bus company, time of day, and which stop you get on.  You can pay with the Octopus Card.  If you're paying in cash, remember that drivers do not carry change.  The numbering system can be difficult for visitors.  Each district has its own numbering system, so be sure to keep that in mind when planning your trip.  

Minibuses are also available.  There are two types: green and red.  Minibuses are not recommended for tourists, as just about everything is in Cantonese and there are no fixed routes.  Prices are a little cheaper, but vary based on location and time of day.  All green buses accept the Octopus Card, some red buses do not.

The Octopus Card, initiated in 1997, was the first electronic public transport smart card system in the world.  It works like a debit card and is valid on all public transportation in Hong Kong (except taxis), as well as some stores and restaurants.  Initial cost for a basic Octopus Card is $150, including a $50 refundable deposit.  They can be recharged at machines or customer service booths in MTR stations.
