Built as a majestic country house in the 18th century, this place was just recently transformed into a hotel. It is yet another delightful little building that cannot be distinguished as a hotel from all the other similar-looking houses around it. The hotel is in close proximity to the local market (Souk al Melh), the National Art Center, the Great Mosque, and the steam baths.
The hotel provides currency exchange facility for US$ and the Euro, as well as baggage storage.
A total of 36 rooms, promising security and privacy. Not all rooms have a separate bath – some rooms share one. All rooms have an appealing, traditional Yemeni ambience, from the wall treatments to the bed sheets to the furniture and decor.
Single Rooms are priced at $20, Doubles at $25, and Triples at $30. For a room with an attached bath, add $5. For an extra bed placed in the same room, add another $10. The prices are inclusive of breakfast.
Room service and laundry facilities are available on demand.
1. Taj Restaurant: the hotel’s main diner. Open from 630am to midnight, serving all three meals a day. Located on the ground floor, with part of it semi-open, providing for a lovely evening terrace. The hotel serves traditional Yemeni and some European cuisine.
2. Mocha Cafeteria: situated on the 6th floor (rooftop), giving breathtaking views over the usual 4-5 storey houses. Makes an excellent sunset and nighttime sitting space. Steaming Yemeni coffee and tea are served from 8am to 11pm, as well as foreign beverages, traditional Yemeni confectionery, and light snacks.
3. The Mafraj: more of a traditional socializing space than a restaurant. Located on the topmost floor, with views over the entire city. Indulge in the Qat parties and intermingle with the locals and other visitors.
