Jumeirah, Rotana, May Expand In India
Jumeirah and Rotana are among the international hotel brands considering expanding into India despite problems like high real estate costs and different business models. India is a largely underserved market and Hilton, Hyatt, Marriot, and Accor are some of the international hotel chains with big growth plans there. Michael Issenberg, Accor Asia Pacific Chairman and CEO, said “India is one of the world’s most dynamic economies and a country that offers significant prospects for the development of hotels.”
Accor currently has five hotels in India and plans to build 50 more, adding 10,400 rooms, by 2012. According to media reports, the planned hotels include a new ibis hotel in Pune later this year, seven new hotels in 2010, 18 new hotels in 2011, and 19 in 2012. Gerald Lawless, Jumeirah’s Executive Chairman, said “We see the country as an opportunity to continue growing our global brand presence out of our home base in Dubai”
