Jakarta is situated close to the equator; hence, the year round climate is generally tropical, hot and humid. Generally, average temperatures are almost the same in January as well as July at approximately 28°C. Temperature variation during the day is also not a lot – it ranges from a low of 24°C to a high of 31°C. Rainfall is moderate pretty much throughout the year; however, the main rainy season falls mostly between late October until early May. Since the elevation of the city is 4 meters (13 feet) only, essentially below sea level, the drainage system does not properly drain the excess water resulting in flooding during heavy rainfall, especially between December and March.
