Ram Navami celebrates the birth of the Hindu mythical king, Lord Rama, son of King Dasharatha of Ayodhya. This festival is celebrated on the ninth day of the Hindu lunar calendar. On this day temples are decorated and the idol of Lord Ram is richly adorned. Religious gatherings and processions are organized and prayers are chanted. Rama is the hero of the Ramayana, one of the Holy books of the Hindus. In his honor and respect, a continuous recital of this book takes place over the eight days leading to this festival and also on this day itself. Some devotees fast for nine days while others fast on the ninth day only.
