Mahavir Jayanti

The single most important festival for the Jain community, Mahavir Jayanti celebrates the birth of Lord Mahavira, the founder of  Jainism, a religion that preaches an extreme form of ascetism and self control. This festival is celebrated on the 13th day of the month of Chaitra according to the Hindu lunar calendar. Contrary to other festivals, this is not celebrated with pomp and show. Rather, devotees gather together and spend time in silent prayer and reflection and meditate on the life of Lord Mahavir and his teachings.
