Taxis are a good way to get around Hong Kong.  They're ubiquitous, convenient, and relatively cheap compared to other developed cities.  There are three types of taxis in Hong Kong, easily distinguishable by their colors.  Red taxis (or Urban Taxis) are the most expensive and serve all of Hong Kong.  Fares start at $18.00.  After 2km, you're charged $1.50/200m.

The green taxis cover the New Territories.  They're slightly cheaper, but are limited to Hong Kong's New Territories, as well as the airport and Disney Land (though not the rest of Lantau Island).  Blue taxis are the cheapest, but only cover Lantau island only, including the airport and Disney Land.

There is a $30 fee for each toll to be paid by the passenger.  Drivers are only required to have change for $100 bills, so be sure to carry change.  There's also a $5 charge for each piece of luggage you need to store in the trunk.  Remember to make sure the meter is running and to know specifically where you are going, as drivers often struggle with English.
